J.R. Smith, a two-time NBA champion who won titles with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, was taken into custody following an alleged domestic incident in Texas. Law enforcement authorities transferred the 17-year NBA veteran to the Hunt County Detention Center. According to jail records cited by TMZ, Smith’s mugshot shows him looking impassive following the booking.
The arrest marks another legal confrontation for Smith. In 2007, Smith served a 24-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to reckless driving stemming from an automobile accident that resulted in the death of a passenger. Just two days prior to his Texas arrest, Smith spoke publicly about the severe strain that period during his third NBA season placed on his personal relationships.
From 17-Year NBA Career to Collegiate Golf and Graduation
Selected 18th overall by the New Orleans Hornets, Smith carved out a lengthy professional basketball career. He played for the Hornets until 2006, when he was traded to the Denver Nuggets. During the 2011 NBA lockout, he played overseas for the Zhejiang Golden Bulls in China before returning stateside to join the New York Knicks in 2012.
Playing alongside LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love, Smith played for the Cavaliers team that defeated the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals. He reached the Finals two more times with Cleveland before joining the Los Angeles Lakers to win his second championship ring in 2020.
