Russia has issued a formal nuclear warning to NATO regarding the Baltic Sea enclave of Kaliningrad, cautioning the Western military alliance against attempting to isolate the heavily armed Russian territory. The warning, outlined in an official letter to NATO, states that Moscow is prepared to use nuclear weapons if necessary to protect the exclave, pointing to the provisions of Russia’s active nuclear doctrine.
Kremlin Ultimatum Over Baltic Enclave
The diplomatic warning highlights a sharp escalation in tensions between Moscow and European capitals. European officials have repeatedly accused Russia of stepping up a campaign of hybrid warfare across the continent, citing incidents of sabotage and arson.
Moscow Outlines Red Lines in Official Letter
In an official letter delivered to NATO, Moscow outlined its stance on the geopolitical flashpoint situated between Poland and Lithuania. According to the communication, Russia harbors no intention of launching an attack against NATO member states. However, the letter explicitly warns that any direct aggression targeting Kaliningrad will face the strongest possible response from the Russian military.
“It’s quite natural that our diplomats are trying to remind the reckless in Europe of our policy documents on this matter,” Dmitry Peskov said in response to journalist inquiries regarding the warning.
Accusations of Provocation and Threat of Strikes
The Kremlin’s letter accuses the Western alliance of orchestrating an unprecedented military and political escalation around the Russian region. Moscow specifically pointed to public statements made by allied officials as dangerously provocative.
“This dangerous and reckless course creates a danger right from the start of the conflict of the outbreak of a direct armed conflict with the possibility of Russian strikes against the decision-making centers of the alliance’s member countries,” the letter states, according to reporting from international news agencies.
Alliance Rejects Assertions and Condemns Rhetoric
NATO officials rejected the assertions made in the Russian communication and condemned the tone of the warning. Allison Hart, a spokesperson for the alliance, pushed back against Moscow’s characterization of NATO’s posture in the region.
“NATO is a defensive alliance and no activity or exercises of ours pose a threat to any part of Russia,” Hart stated. She added that the alliance strongly condemns threats of force, including any form of what she termed irresponsible nuclear rhetoric.
