Hammarby Secure Europa Cup Round of 16 Spot After Defeating Rangers
Hammarby advanced to the Women’s Europa Cup round of 16 after defeating Rangers 3-0 on Wednesday, completing a 5-0 aggregate victory in the main tournament qualifier. Carrying a 2-0 lead from the first leg at Kanalplan, the Swedish side maintained control throughout the return fixture in Scotland to seal their progression.
Anna Walter opened the scoring in the 14th minute, capitalizing on a pass from Janzen to round the goalkeeper and finish into the net for her first goal for the club. “It felt nice to score today. You could well say I dribbled the goalkeeper, it went in and that was the most important thing,” Walter told SVT Sport.
Second-Half Goals Seal Aggregate Victory
Following the early breakthrough, Hammarby extended their advantage in the second half through Ida Hermannsdottir and 16-year-old Fanny Petersson. Petersson added the final goal of the match by reacting to a rebound, lifting her foot high to poke the ball past the Rangers goalkeeper for a 3-0 scoreline on the night.
“It’s great that we’re through. It’s cool to play in Europe,” Petersson told SVT Sport regarding the result.
The comprehensive win follows Hammarby’s run to the final of the competition last season, where they finished as runners-up to BK Häcken.
