The 41-year-old forward announced his departure from the squad via an Instagram post, stating that he decided to leave the camp after meeting with the federation president and following the manager’s press conference. Ronaldo stated that the reasons behind his exit from a team he has long represented will be shared with the Portuguese public in the future, while wishing his teammates success.
Ronaldo went straight to the dressing room after remaining unused during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway.
Manager Jorge Jesus Explains Squad Decisions
Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus addressed the situation during a press conference ahead of the match against Denmark, confirming that he informed Ronaldo he would not be selected for either the Norway or Denmark fixtures. Jesus stated that he held a discussion with the player, who had missed the previous three training sessions on the pitch.
"If I need him for 30 minutes, he comes on, if not, he doesn’t," Jesus said during the press conference. "No player can change my decision. Neither he nor anyone else. No president either. Never."
