Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced that he will condition future government formation talks on political parties excluding the AUR party from any governing coalition. The head of state stated that an AUR presence in power would damage Romania’s relationships with European Union and security partners, a risk the country cannot take.

Presidential Mandate and Pro-Western Direction

President Nicușor Dan stated that his insistence on barring AUR from government stems directly from the mandate voters gave him a year and four months ago. According to the president, that mandate centers on maintaining a pro-Western direction and ensuring financial stability for Romania without economic turbulence. Dan noted that numerous public manifestations demonstrate that AUR fails to meet these essential conditions. He clarified that his stance does not stem from disrespect toward AUR voters.

Upcoming Prime Ministerial Nomination

Following five months of political negotiations and exploratory talks, President Dan confirmed he has multiple candidates in mind for the prime ministerial nomination. However, he emphasized that it would be unconstitutional to announce a final choice before holding a new round of formal consultations with political parties. The previous governing attempt, which was politically backed by three parties and centered around Siegfried Mureșan, did not work. The president will hold informal discussions with party leaders ahead of official meetings at Cotroceni Palace, culminating in a formal prime ministerial designation.

Why is President Nicușor Dan excluding AUR from government talks?

The president maintains that an AUR presence in government would harm Romania’s security partnerships and relationship with the European Union, violating the pro-Western and financially stable mandate entrusted to him by voters.

When will the next prime minister be nominated?

President Dan scheduled formal consultations with political parties at Cotroceni Palace on Monday, with the official designation of a new prime minister to follow on Monday evening.

What happened to the previous government formation attempt?

The prior political arrangement, which was supported by three parties and featured Siegfried Mureșan, did not work, prompting the president to restart consultations.
