Los Alamos Medical Center Earns Acute Stroke Ready Hospital Certification

Los Alamos Medical Center secured the Acute Stroke Ready Hospital Certification from The Joint Commission and the American Stroke Association, establishing its readiness to manage emergency stroke cases locally. The certification follows an onsite evaluation where reviewers assessed program management, clinical care delivery, and patient self-management support standards.

Evaluation and Certification Standards

During the onsite visit, Joint Commission reviewers examined hospital compliance across multiple clinical and operational categories. According to the hospital announcement, the review team conducted direct observations and staff interviews to evaluate how clinical teams facilitate high-level care and manage stroke protocols. The certification process aims to reduce clinical variation and strengthen hospital programs to improve patient safety, as noted by Ken Grubbs, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations at The Joint Commission.

Michael Covert, chief executive officer of Los Alamos Medical Center, stated that the achievement reflects ongoing collaboration between the clinical staff, community partners, and accrediting organizations. Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association, noted that the designation highlights the facility’s commitment to maintaining high standards of clinical care for stroke patients.

Emergency Stroke Care Infrastructure

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that a stroke occurs every 40 seconds in the United States, making rapid medical intervention critical for patient recovery. Los Alamos Medical Center maintains 24/7 emergency care operations to provide acute stroke services within the community, minimizing delays in treatment when time-sensitive neurological events happen.

Program Impact and Operational Goals

Achieving the Acute Stroke Ready Hospital credential demonstrates the facility’s adherence to nationally developed standards created in consultation with healthcare providers, measurement experts, and patients.
