Over 300 Patients Treated at Limerick Long Covid Clinic Since 2022

A total of 333 patients have received treatment at the Health Service Executive’s (HSE) Long Covid clinic in Limerick since its opening in 2022, according to health service figures. The service experienced its highest volume of attendees in 2024, when the facility managed 132 patients.

Patient Attendance Trends at the Limerick Facility

Clinic volumes fluctuated significantly over the years of operation following the facility’s establishment. In the opening year of 2022, the clinic recorded just four patients. Attendance increased markedly to 80 patients in 2023, before reaching a peak of 132 individuals in 2024.

The numbers declined in subsequent reporting periods. In 2025, the clinic provided care to 79 patients. During the early months of 2026, the facility has treated 38 individuals.

Integrated Care Pathways and Clinical Assessment

Patients seeking support at the Limerick clinic require a referral from a general practitioner. Rather than operating as a standalone, dedicated facility, the clinic assesses and treats patients via integrated respiratory and infectious disease pathways.

Medical professionals note that Long Covid manifests with persistent symptoms lasting well past the clearance of an initial acute infection. Documented indicators include extreme fatigue, chest pain, breathing difficulties, sleep disruptions, and cognitive issues commonly referred to as brain fog. Additional presentations involve heart palpitations, dizziness, and joint or muscle pain, alongside other secondary complications not necessarily present during the initial phase of illness.

Guidance on Symptoms and Seasonal Vaccination

Health authorities advise individuals experiencing Covid-19 symptoms that persist for more than four weeks, or symptoms that worsen over time, to seek formal medical evaluation through their general practitioner.

To mitigate severe illness risks during the winter season, medical officials recommend vaccination for vulnerable populations. The health authority provides free Covid-19 vaccines to individuals classified in at-risk categories and to everyone aged 60 and older.
