Leiden authorities are setting up a dedicated Halt office at the Langegracht police station during the Leidens Ontzet celebrations to crack down on underage alcohol violations, according to the Leidsch Dagblad. The municipality, enforcement agencies, and the police are collaborating at the special location to address the problem of minors consuming alcohol in violation of the under-18 prohibition during the festivities on 2 and 3 October.
Under the enforcement measures, young people caught breaking the rules can be brought directly to the Halt office. Once there, they receive a Halt referral and their parents are contacted to come pick up their child. At Halt, the young people are given the opportunity to learn from their behavior by engaging in a discussion about what happened and the consequences of their actions.
Leiden Officials Urge Parents to Discuss Alcohol Risks
In a joint appeal, the municipality of Leiden and the Centrum voor jeugd en gezin Hollands Midden are urging parents to talk with their children about alcohol consumption. Authorities stress that especially during these festive days, it remains important to stand still and consider the risks of drinking among minors. Officials note that every year, young people end up at the Emergency Department after falling ill or being involved in accidents where alcohol played a role.
Transportation Adjustments During the Festivities
Beyond the enforcement measures at the police station, transportation providers are adjusting operations for the events. Bus operator Qbuzz is handing out liquorice shaped like herring during the celebration, as actual fish are not distributed by them, while operating detours because the city center is largely closed off from September 28 through October 4.
