Empowering Caribbean Storytellers: New Animation Workshop Fosters Eco-Consciousness adn Peace
A collaborative initiative between North Eleven (Trinidad and Tobago) and the Hairouna Film Festival (St. Vincent and the Grenadines) is launching the Caribbean Animation for Eco-care and Peace (CAEP) workshop, a unique possibility designed to cultivate the next generation of animators in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). This program responds to a growing demand for skilled creatives in the Caribbean animation industry, which, while nascent, demonstrates meaningful potential for economic growth and cultural expression.
Cultivating Animation skills wiht a Purpose
The CAEP workshop isn’t simply about technical training; it’s about harnessing the power of animation to address critical regional concerns. participants will delve into all facets of the animation process, from initial story development and character design to mastering both digital and conventional animation techniques. The ultimate goal is the creation of compelling short animations centered around themes of environmental stewardship and the promotion of peace – vital messages for a region increasingly impacted by climate change and seeking strengthened community bonds.
these completed animations will gain valuable exposure through screenings at the prestigious hairouna Film festival and potentially at other film showcases, offering participants a platform to share their work with a wider audience.
Workshop Details: A hybrid Learning Experience
Running from July 2nd to September 15th, 2025, the six-week workshop adopts a flexible hybrid model, blending the convenience of remote learning with the benefits of in-person collaboration. Most sessions will take place during weekday evenings and weekends. The extended timeframe allows ample opportunity for refinement and preparation for film festival submissions.
To participate, applicants must possess a reliable computer equipped with a webcam, speakers, microphone, and a stable internet connection. this requirement acknowledges the increasing accessibility of digital tools and aims to bridge the digital divide, enabling wider participation.
Who Can Apply?
The workshop is open to individuals who meet the following criteria:
Age 18 or older
Current residency in St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Basic computer literacy
Consistent access to a computer and reliable internet
Familiarity with Google Workspace applications
Proficiency in English
Successful applicants will be expected to fully commit to the program, including all virtual sessions and a one-week intensive in-person component. The time commitment is estimated at approximately two hours per online class, plus an additional five hours of autonomous work per session. This dedication reflects the intensive nature of animation training and the importance of consistent practice.
Funding and Partnerships: A Regional Collaboration
This impactful project is made possible through a collaborative agreement involving The University of the West Indies, UNESCO, and CARICOM. Funding is provided by the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) through the ACP Innovation Fund, supported by the 11th European Union Development Fund (EuropeAid/167697/IH/ACT/MULTI). The initiative falls under the broader “Creative Caribbean: An Ecosystem of ‘P.L.A.Y’ for Growth and Development” project, highlighting a regional commitment to fostering creativity and innovation.
