Spain’s Euro 2025 hopes Tempered by Aitana Bonmatí’s Illness
A significant setback has struck the Spanish women’s national team just days before the commencement of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 tournament. Star midfielder Aitana Bonmatí, a two-time Ballon d’Or recipient, has been admitted to hospital with viral meningitis, as confirmed by head coach Montse Tome.
Recent Match and Current Condition
Bonmatí was absent from Spain’s recent 3-1 victory against Japan in a preparatory kind match held on Friday. The team is currently finalizing preparations for their opening Group B fixture against Portugal, scheduled for July 3rd. The player herself shared a glimpse of her condition with fans, posting a photo from her hospital bed while watching the game via instagram.
Coach Tome sought to reassure supporters, stating, “The doctors assure us the situation is under control. While meningitis understandably causes concern, her case is being effectively managed.” However, the duration of Bonmatí’s absence remains uncertain, with Tome adding, “Aitana will remain hospitalized, and we currently have no definitive timeline for her return.”
Bonmatí’s Impact and Spain’s Tournament prospects
The absence of Bonmatí represents a ample loss for Spain. The Barcelona playmaker has been instrumental in the team’s recent successes, contributing 30 goals in 78 international appearances. Her pivotal role was particularly evident during Spain’s triumphant campaigns at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2023 Women’s Nations League. Bonmatí’s accolades also include being named FIFA Women’s Player of the Year for both 2023 and 2024, solidifying her status as one of the world’s premier footballers.
“Aitana is an incredibly valuable player for us, and we will await her recovery for provided that possible,” Tome emphasized.
Spain faces a challenging path in Group B, also contending with Belgium and Italy. Historically, the team has struggled to reach the pinnacle of European competition, with their best result being a semi-final appearance in 1997. The team will need to overcome this historical hurdle and navigate the tournament without one of their key players.
