Marseille Welcomes New CAF Urbos Trams to Modernize Public Transportation

Introduction of the Next-Generation Tram Fleet

This week marked a notable step in Marseille’s public transport modernization with the arrival of the first CAF Urbos tram. Ordered in 2022, these new trams are poised to enhance the passenger experience and capacity of the city’s network. Full passenger service is anticipated by the end of the year.

Design and Passenger Capacity

The new CAF Urbos trams, designed for Marseille, share similarities with the existing Bombardier Flexity Outlook models currently in operation. Key improvements focus on the interior layout, maximizing passenger comfort and capacity. Each seven-car tram can comfortably accommodate up to 262 passengers, with 62 dedicated seating spaces.

Technical Specifications & Enhanced Comfort

These modern trams measure 42.5 meters in length and 2.65 meters in width, offering a spacious and accessible environment. Features include a 100% low-floor design for easy boarding, full air conditioning, and convenient USB charging ports for passengers’ electronic devices. The tram bodies are constructed from lightweight aluminum.

Contract Details and Production Location

The contract, valued at 57 million euros, encompasses the delivery of 15 trams. Production of these vehicles is taking place at CAF’s facility in Bagnères-de-Bigorre,France,supporting local manufacturing and employment.

Anticipated deployment

Marseille’s public transport authority is preparing for the full deployment of the new tram fleet, with passenger service expected to commence in November. This investment signals a commitment to providing a modern, efficient, and comfortable public transportation system for the city’s residents and visitors.
