Appalachian league Fuels MLB Pipeline: 2025 Draft Success
The 2025 Major league Baseball Draft showcased the significant impact of the Appalachian League, wiht a remarkable 28 alumni hearing their names called. This year’s draft results demonstrate the league’s growing prominence as a key developmental stepping stone for aspiring professional baseball players.
Early Round Dominance
A substantial seven former Appy League players were chosen within the first 100 selections, including a first-round pick, two second-round selections, adn four in the third round. This represents a considerable increase in early-round talent emerging from the league. Leading the charge was Marcus Phillips,formerly of the Elizabethton team (2024),who was selected 33rd overall by the Boston Red Sox. Phillips marks the third player in league history to be drafted in the first round and achieves the second-highest draft position for an Appy League alumnus.
The early rounds saw a flurry of Appy League representation. Alongside Phillips, Cooper Flemming (Bristol) and tanner Franklin (Bristol) were both chosen in the second round, at picks 53 and 72 respectively. Rounding out the top three rounds were Josh Owens (84th), Jacob Morrison (94th), Cody Miller (96th), and Cody Bowker (100th). For context, in the league’s preceding four years, only four players total had been selected within the first three rounds – a testament to the recent surge in talent.
Pioneering High School Talent
This year’s draft also witnessed a historic moment for the Appy League, as four players who competed in the league during the 2025 season were selected: Flemming (Bristol), Owens (Elizabethton), Wyatt Vincent (Pulaski), and Landry Jurecka (Pulaski). Notably, Flemming, Owens, and Vincent represent the first high school players ever drafted directly from the Appy League, highlighting the league’s expanding role in identifying and nurturing young talent before they head to college.
League-Wide representation & MLB Interest
The success wasn’t limited to a few teams. Every organization participating in the Appalachian League had at least one player drafted, demonstrating the broad reach of the league’s developmental impact. Elizabethton boasted the most selections with seven, closely followed by Pulaski with six. The interest extended to the Major League level, with six different MLB organizations selecting at least two former Appy League players.The Arizona Diamondbacks and the New York Yankees demonstrated the strongest commitment, each drafting three Appy League alumni.
