AI-Powered Stethoscope Detects Heart Conditions in 15 Seconds

Doctors have successfully developed an artificial intelligence-led stethoscope capable of detecting three heart conditions in just 15 seconds.

The conventional stethoscope, invented in 1816, has been an essential tool for medics for over two centuries, used to listen to sounds within the body. Now, a team has designed a hi-tech upgrade with AI capabilities that can diagnose heart failure, heart valve disease, and abnormal heart rhythms almost instantly.Developed by researchers at Imperial College London and imperial College healthcare NHS Trust, the new stethoscope analyzes subtle differences in heartbeat and blood flow undetectable to the human ear, concurrently taking a rapid ECG.

Details of this breakthrough, which promises to boost early diagnosis of these three conditions, were presented to thousands of doctors at the European Society of Cardiology annual congress in Madrid – the world’s largest heart conference.

Early diagnosis is crucial for heart failure, heart valve disease, and abnormal heart rhythms, ensuring those needing lifesaving medications are identified sooner, before their conditions worsen.

A study trialing the AI stethoscope involved approximately 12,000 patients from 200 GP surgeries in the UK, focusing on individuals experiencing symptoms like breathlessness or fatigue.Patients examined with the new tool were twice as likely to be diagnosed with heart failure compared to similar patients not examined using the technology. They were also three times more likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation – an abnormal heart rhythm that can increase the risk of stroke.
