A32 Closure at Grou Aquaduct Driven by Falling Glass Risk

Eighty-four glass lamp fixtures hanging above the A32 motorway near Grou pose a falling hazard, prompting Rijkswaterstaat to close the highway in both directions starting Thursday evening at 21:00, NOS reported. The glass plates protecting the lighting inside the Midden-Friesland Aquaduct are vulnerable to traffic-induced vibrations and the suction forces of passing heavy trucks. In August, glass panels already fell onto the roadway, leading to subsequent inspections that revealed the current systemic failure.

Specialist contractors utilizing a mobile elevated work platform are removing all 84 fixtures—42 per direction—because the glass cannot be immediately replaced due to a lack of available materials. Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson Jayme Tol stated that “het zit niet goed,” as reported. The highway closure between the Grou and Akkrum exits may last through the entire weekend while the dangerous glass is stripped from the tunnel ceiling.

Detours and Commuter Disruption on Northern Arteries

Traffic between Heerenveen and Leeuwarden faces mandatory detours via Drachten along the N31 Wâldwei and the A7 motorway. Rijkswaterstaat urged drivers to follow official signage rather than navigation systems to prevent local gridlock. Nevertheless, heavy freight traffic has already triggered problems on surrounding roads, with semi-trailer combinations bypassing restrictions to use the Oude Schouw bridge and minor local routes, Omrop Fryslân reported.

Emergency services retain passage through the A32 aquaduct during the closure, permitted to use the narrow emergency lanes where no overhead lighting fixtures hang. While local access to Grou from Leeuwarden and Akkrum from Heerenveen remains open on unaffected segments of the A32, parallel construction work between Grou and Akkrum is exacerbating congestion on local bypasses.

Aquaduct remains dark without temporary lighting as reopening schedule stays uncertain

Once contractors finish removing the glass plates, the aquaduct will remain dark for the foreseeable future because Rijkswaterstaat decided against installing temporary lighting.

Uncertainty remains regarding the exact reopening schedule. While road authorities hope to clear lanes progressively over the coming days, a future closure will be required once replacement materials arrive to install new lighting fixtures inside the Midden-Friesland Aquaduct.

Emergency vehicles pass closed aquaduct while crews remove 84 risky fixtures

Can emergency vehicles still pass through the closed A32 aquaduct at Grou?

Yes. Emergency vehicles are permitted to drive through the tunnel using the narrow emergency lanes, which are free of overhead lighting fixtures.

How many lighting fixtures must Rijkswaterstaat remove from the tunnel?

Crews must remove a total of 84 lighting fixtures, split evenly with 42 units hanging over each of the two motorway directions.

What specific damage prompted the emergency highway closure?

Inspections revealed that vibration and truck suction made the glass plates in the light enclosures vulnerable, threatening to drop glass onto the asphalt just as panels did in August.
