ABP Food Group has initiated a consultation process with approximately 230 employees at its Ferrybank facility, focusing on the cutting and deboning sections. RTÉ reports that the abattoir operations will remain unaffected, and the facility will continue to process cattle. The company has emphasized its commitment to engaging constructively with employees during this period.

Factors Driving the Redundancies

The primary drivers behind the potential redundancies are a decrease in the national livestock supply and rising operational costs in Ireland. The Farmers Journal highlights that the national cattle herd fell by 276,000 (3.8%) in 2025, a trend previously warned about by ABP UK CEO Kevin Cahill. ABP intends to maximize efficiency by utilizing other facilities to mitigate the impact of these challenges.

Employee Concerns and Government Response

Workers at the Ferrybank plant have expressed concerns about the potential job losses. Waterford News & Star interviewed employees, including those from Ukraine and Brazil, who voiced anxieties about their financial security and visa status. Some employees, particularly newer hires, expressed frustration over the short notice period and limited job prospects.

Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris stated that the government will provide support to affected workers, working with the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment and the Department of Social Protection to minimize the risk of job losses and assist those impacted.

Recent ABP Restructuring

These potential redundancies follow ABP’s recent closure of a packing facility in Linden, Co. Tyrone in January, resulting in 338 job losses. WLRfm reports that ABP has been undertaking wider cost-cutting exercises and operational restructuring to address the current market conditions.
