Africa Foundational Learning Exchange (FLEX2026) to Accelerate Learning Gains
The Africa Foundational Learning Exchange (FLEX) is set to convene in Lilongwe, Malawi, from July 15-17, 2026, bringing together key stakeholders to address the critical need for improved foundational learning across the continent. As the largest platform for country-to-country exchange in this domain, FLEX2026 aims to translate commitments into tangible results, focusing on scaling effective interventions and fostering collaboration.
Addressing Foundational Learning Challenges
FLEX2026 will center around the theme “From commitments to results: Delivering foundational learning at scale.” The exchange will gather policymakers, thought leaders, development partners, implementers, and other education actors. The overarching goal is to catalyze the scaling of evidence-based interventions and share initiatives that support both teachers and learners in improving foundational learning outcomes. Global Partnership for Education is supporting the event.
Key Objectives of FLEX2026
The conference will provide a platform for countries to:
- Share progress on national foundational learning commitments, building on advancements made since FLEX2024 and the 2025 ADEA Triennale.
- Showcase successful interventions supported by robust data and research.
- Reflect on strategies to enhance implementation and capitalize on opportunities for scaling.
- Strengthen accountability for improving classroom instruction and learning outcomes.
- Foster new partnerships and facilitate cross-country technical exchange.
Conference Format and Expected Outcomes
FLEX2026 will employ a variety of formats, including presentations, ministerial roundtables, plenary panels, and technical deep dives, alongside both formal and informal dialogue. Participants will collaboratively develop a forward-looking agenda to accelerate progress towards the 2035 targets for ending learning poverty in Africa. VVOB is also involved in the conference.
FLEX as Part of a Broader Ecosystem
The FLEX conference series is a key component of a larger effort to improve education across Africa. It complements initiatives like GITEX AFRICA’s FLEX, which focuses on the talent economy and digital skills development, demonstrating a holistic approach to educational advancement. ADEA is hosting FLEX2026 in Malawi.
Looking Ahead
FLEX2026 represents a crucial opportunity to accelerate progress in foundational learning across Africa. By fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and strengthening accountability, the exchange aims to deliver lasting improvements in educational outcomes for millions of children.
