AI Agents Tackle Cold Case: The Olof Palme Investigation

The 1986 assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme remains one of Europe’s most enduring mysteries. Now, a team of investigative journalists and an Amsterdam-based AI company are leveraging artificial intelligence to re-examine the vast archives of evidence, hoping to unlock new insights into the decades-old cold case.

A Mountain of Evidence

The police investigation into Palme’s murder amassed an enormous dataset – over 250 meters of archived material and thousands of digitized files. This sheer volume of information proved insurmountable for traditional investigative methods. According to reports, a single investigator would require seven years of continuous reading to process the entire dossier.

Spår Podcast and the Power of AI

Swedish journalists Anton Berg and Martin Johnson, creators of the true crime podcast Spår, have a track record of reopening closed cases, even securing the release of a man wrongly convicted. Their success with AI in previous investigations led them to collaborate with ML6, an AI development company, to build a specialized tool for the Palme case.

PalmeNet-Chat 2.0: An AI-Powered Investigation

ML6 developed “PalmeChat,” a Deep Research AI agent system deployed on Google Cloud. This system utilizes Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), hybrid vector and keyword search, and multi-agent workflows to analyze the complex case files. Unlike typical chatbot applications, PalmeChat was designed to provide unfiltered access to all information and the AI’s reasoning process, as requested by the journalists. Johnson emphasized the need for the AI to avoid summarization or “smart shortcuts,” preferring a comprehensive presentation of the evidence, mirroring the approach of a traditional investigator.

Navigating the Challenges of AI in Investigation

The development process wasn’t without its challenges. ML6’s Sebastian Wehkamp noted that the journalists’ request for complete transparency and detailed reasoning was unusual, as most clients prefer concise summaries. The AI was programmed to avoid drawing conclusions, instead focusing on presenting the most common theories surrounding the murder and acknowledging its inability to definitively identify the perpetrator.

Initial Findings and Future Prospects

While PalmeChat hasn’t solved the murder, it has proven capable of providing remarkably accurate overviews of key events, such as the final 30 seconds of Palme’s life, and highlighting inconsistencies in witness testimonies. Berg and Johnson hope the AI’s ability to sift through the “90 percent of noise” within the dossier will help to identify crucial leads and potentially prompt a reopening of the case. The first episode of the podcast featuring the AI’s analysis has been released, marking a new chapter in the pursuit of justice in the Olof Palme investigation.
