Aidan O’Connor: Limerick Hurling’s Rising Star

Limerick hurler Aidan O’Connor is rapidly establishing himself as a key player for both his club, Ballybrown, and the Limerick senior team. His consistent top-scoring performances in the League, coupled with his growing confidence and accuracy, have drawn praise from manager John Kiely and are signaling a bright future for the young forward.

Consistent League Performances

O’Connor has consistently led the scoring charts for Limerick throughout their recent League successes. He top-scored in each of their three consecutive League wins, incrementally increasing his contribution with each game: 0-10, 0-11, and most recently, 1-11 against Cork. This includes a notable balance of scoring from both play and placed balls, with four points from open play against Cork bringing his League total to 0-14.

Kiely’s Praise and Growing Confidence

Limerick manager John Kiely has highlighted O’Connor’s development and the confidence he has gained. “In sport, it takes a long time to build confidence, and he’s worked so hard over the last number of years to put himself into the frame to get on the pitch, and now that he’s taken this opportunity, which he has when we gave him the frees a number of weeks ago, you couldn’t budge him off them,” Kiely stated. Kiely also emphasized O’Connor’s accuracy, energy, and comfortable position within the team, noting the healthy competition for places that drives performance.

Team Progression and Injury Updates

Kiely expressed contentment with the team’s overall progression throughout the spring, noting improvements in efficiency and adaptation during matches. He highlighted the team’s ability to create chances and improve their execution in the second half of games.

Regarding injuries, Darragh O’Donovan is making “incredible amount of progress” from a shoulder injury and is expected to return to training within a couple of weeks. Peter Casey, Dan Morrissey, and Matthew Fitzgerald are also anticipated to return to training next week.

Cork’s Perspective

Cork manager Ben O’Connor acknowledged Limerick’s superiority in the recent match but expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, particularly given that the lineup featured only six starters from the previous year’s All-Ireland final. He emphasized the value of the experience gained by his players and their commitment to the game.

Cork’s League final hopes remain within reach, contingent on a victory against Offaly.
