Apple Launches AirPods Max 2 with H2 Chip and Enhanced Features
Apple has quietly announced the second generation of its premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max 2. The new headphones, available for pre-order starting March 25th and shipping in early April, integrate the H2 chip found in the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods 4, bringing a suite of advanced features and improved performance to the flagship audio device. The price remains at $549, the same as the original model.
What’s New in AirPods Max 2?
The AirPods Max 2 maintain the same design and color options – blue, purple, star white, black, and orange – as their predecessors, including the controversial Smart Case. However, the internal upgrades are significant, aligning the AirPods Max experience with the latest AirPods Pro features.
- Adaptive Audio: Dynamically adjusts active noise cancellation (ANC) and transparency mode based on the surrounding environment for optimal listening.
- Conversation Awareness: Detects when you initiate speaking and automatically mutes audio while reducing ambient noise, allowing for seamless conversations.
- Voice Isolation: Utilizes the H2 chip to enhance your voice during calls while suppressing background noise.
- Remote Camera Shutter Release: Enables control of iPhone or iPad camera functions, including photo capture and video recording, directly from the Digital Crown. Compatible with third-party applications as well.
- Studio-Quality Sound Recording: Offers cleaner and more natural voice recording, catering to content creators like journalists, podcasters, and musicians.
- Improved Noise Cancellation: Features 1.5x more effective noise cancellation compared to the previous generation.
H2 Chip and Audio Enhancements
The integration of the H2 chip is central to the improvements in AirPods Max 2. Beyond the new features, the chip delivers a new high-dynamic range amplifier for cleaner audio, richer bass, more natural vocals, and precise instrument localization. The headphones also support 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio when connected via USB-C.
Pricing and Availability
The AirPods Max 2 are priced at $549 and are available for pre-order starting March 25th, with shipping commencing in early April. The USB-C to 3.5mm audio jack cable remains available for purchase separately at $109.
