Dutch cabaretier Gover Meit, known to some for his appearance on the Flemish television program De Slimste Mens ter Wereld, recently concluded a try-out run of his new present, “Larie,” in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, with a performance that sparked considerable discussion and a notable audience exodus. The performance, characterized by its unconventional format, saw roughly half of the 165 attendees leave before the show’s conclusion.
A Show Unlike Any Other
The performance at the Foyer in Sint-Niklaas on Thursday evening was unusual from the start. Meit, also known as Stefano Keizers, performed entirely in the dark, with only his voice audible to the audience. He never once appeared on stage, creating a sense of mystery, and detachment. According to reports, Meit even requested the audience refrain from applauding him, suggesting they applaud themselves instead.
Audience Reaction and Early Departures
The unconventional nature of the show proved divisive. While Meit’s performances in Flanders have been quickly selling out following his television appearance, this particular try-out saw a significant number of audience members leaving mid-show. Attendees described the performance as “a depth point” and “anything but comedy.” Approximately half of the original audience of 165 departed during the two-hour performance, leaving those who remained “bewildered.”
Background and Previous Work
Gover Meit gained recognition in Belgium through his participation in De Slimste Mens ter Wereld. Prior to “Larie,” Meit was known for his alter ego, Stefano Keizers, which he has since retired. The show “Larie” represents a new direction for the comedian, described as an attempt to “turn this world that has long been upside down inside out and leave absurdism and alienation trembling in a dark corner.”
Future Performances
Despite the mixed reaction to the try-out, Meit’s upcoming tour through Flanders remains largely sold out, indicating continued interest in his work. The performance in Sint-Niklaas, while unconventional, has undoubtedly generated buzz and anticipation for his future shows.
