The CIEN Foundation: A Hub for Alzheimer’s Research

The CIEN Foundation, dependent on the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), combines cutting-edge research with clinical care. Located near Madrid, the foundation’s facilities include a large residence for people with dementia (150 boarding residents and 50 day hospital patients) and a newly inaugurated Neurophysiology and Neuromodulation Laboratory. This unique combination allows researchers to directly translate laboratory findings into clinical applications, observing patient responses and tracking disease progression.

A key asset of the CIEN Foundation is its biobank, the largest of its kind in Spain, containing brain tissue donated by 800 patients who died with dementia. This resource, highlighted in a recent Nature article, is invaluable for studying the disease both before and after death.1

Breakthroughs in Diagnosis: The Promise of Blood Biomarkers

Recent advancements in diagnostic tools are revolutionizing the approach to Alzheimer’s. Traditionally, accurate diagnosis required analyzing cerebrospinal fluid or using PET scans, both costly and invasive procedures. Now, blood tests are emerging as a viable alternative, offering similar levels of sensitivity and specificity.3 This breakthrough promises to develop early diagnosis more accessible and scalable.

Specifically, the analysis of the p-tau217 protein in blood samples is showing great promise in detecting early stages of Alzheimer’s. Elevated levels of this protein indicate a high probability (over 90%) that cognitive symptoms will progress to the disease.3

New Treatments Targeting Disease Progression

For the first time in over two decades, treatments are available that aim to modify the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, rather than simply managing symptoms. Studies suggest that up to 40% of dementia cases are potentially preventable.3
