AMD Zen 6: What to Expect from Morpheus and the Ryzen 10000 Series
AMD is gearing up to launch its next-generation CPU microarchitecture, Zen 6, codenamed “Morpheus,” expected to power the Ryzen 10000 series processors. This modern architecture promises significant advancements in core counts, instruction set support, and manufacturing processes, setting the stage for substantial performance gains for both desktop and server platforms.
Zen 6 Architecture: A Deep Dive
Zen 6 is the successor to Zen 5 (“Nirvana”) and is anticipated to utilize TSMC’s 3nm and 2nm processes [1]. The architecture is confirmed to introduce new instruction extensions, including AVX512_BMM, AVX_NE_CONVERT, AVX_IFMA, AVX_VNNI_INT8 and AVX512_FP16 [1], enhancing performance in a variety of workloads.
Core Counts and Configurations
AMD is set to introduce a new chiplet design with up to 12 cores per Core Complex Die (CCD) [1]. This allows for configurations of up to 24 cores (48 threads) in consumer platform chips [1]. The Ryzen 10000 series, codenamed “Olympic Ridge,” will offer seven different configurations, ranging from 6 to 24 cores, utilizing both single- and dual-CCD SKUs [2], [3], [4].
Specifically, the configurations will include:
- 6-core (single CCD)
- 8-core (single CCD)
- 10-core (single CCD)
- 12-core (single CCD)
- 16-core (8+8 CCDs)
- 20-core (10+10 CCDs)
- 24-core (12+12 CCDs)
Zen 6c (“Monarch”)
Similar to previous Zen generations, Zen 6 will also feature a high-core-density variant, Zen 6c (“Monarch”) [1]. This variant will be primarily used for server chips (codenamed “Venice”) [1] and potentially mobile platforms.
Manufacturing and Cache
The Ryzen 10000 series will be manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm node [1], enabling increased transistor density. Each CCD is expected to feature 48MB of L3 cache, resulting in a total of 96MB for the 24-core flagship SKU [3].
Release Timeline
Zen 6 is currently expected to release in late 2026 to early 2027 [1]. The processors will be compatible with the AM5 socket [3], extending its lifespan for another generation.
