Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola stated that his squad must accept fluctuating performances as an inevitable part of the transition under his tactical system, following a flat goalless draw with Fulham at Anfield on Saturday. The stalemate left Anfield frustrated just days after Liverpool secured a comeback victory against Atlético Madrid.

Iraola Addresses Anfield Frustration and Inconsistency

Iraola admitted the weekend fixture was perhaps his most frustrating experience since replacing Arne Slot during the summer. The manager described the scoreless display against Fulham as a clear step backward following encouraging wins against Ipswich and Atlético Madrid.

“I understand the frustration the other day because we were also frustrated,” Iraola said. “I think we were coming from two good games and we were considering it’s a step forward, Ipswich was a step forward and Atletico Madrid, and we wanted it to be another step forward. But no, it was a step backwards.”

Iraola emphasized that the team must find a way to replicate the intensity shown in those previous victories. “I think we have to accept that there are going to be ups and downs in the process, but we are clear where we want to go is more towards where we’ve been – Atletico Madrid, Ipswich – that’s more the style of football that we want. I think now the key is the consistency to perform like this,” he added.

Managing Squad Workload Amid a Congested Calendar

Establishing regular performance levels will depend on managing a congested fixture list as Liverpool compete across four fronts. The Reds face struggling Tottenham at Anfield in a Carabao Cup fixture on Tuesday night.

Major squad changes are anticipated for the cup tie. Iraola noted that he is still evaluating which players possess the physical resilience to cope with a match every three days.

“There are players who play every three days, they have no issues, they are very robust,” Iraola explained. “They can accept it and their performances don’t change too much. And there are other players where the risk is bigger, the performances are different.”

The manager admitted he is still learning the limits of individual squad members. “If you ask me how… Jeremy Jacquet is going to deal with playing every three days during two months, I don’t know because he hasn’t done it,” Iraola said.

Injury Updates and Squad Availability

On the injury front, Joe Gomez is in contention to make his first appearance of the campaign. Gomez has returned to training following a muscle injury sustained during pre-season.

Conversely, Northern Ireland right-back Conor Bradley remains a considerable distance away from returning to action following a long-term knee injury. Iraola confirmed that Bradley is restricted to individual training and has only recently started touching the ball again. The manager noted that Giovanni Leoni is slightly further ahead in his recovery, though he will also take time to rejoin the main squad.
