Chelsea Defeat Extends Manchester United Winless Run to Nine Games

Michael Carrick stated he expects to remain in charge for Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against Roma despite a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and a Cole Palmer penalty condemned Carrick’s side to a third straight defeat and a fourth in their last five matches.

The Saturday loss extended United’s winless streak to nine matches in all competitions, marking the club’s worst stretch since November 1988. United’s problems compounded when defender Lisandro Martínez received a red card for two yellow-card offences. The first booking came for kicking out at Rogers, and the second followed a challenge on Wesley Fofana that resulted in the penalty converted by Palmer.

When questioned by TNT Sports after the match regarding his position ahead of Roma’s visit to Old Trafford, Carrick answered directly: “Yes.” The former Middlesbrough head coach attempted to look past the result, stating his focus remains on preparing the squad for midweek fixtures. Carrick added that the team performed well during the opening period before the match unravelled rapidly following the break.

Disciplinary Trouble and Tactical Fallout at Stamford Bridge

Carrick defended his player after the match, stating he did not feel let down by Martínez despite the defender’s dismissal leaving United with ten men. “The second goal and losing the man at that stage had a big influence on it,” Carrick said. United created several opportunities during a competitive first half before folding after conceding the opening goal.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso praised his team’s tactical adjustment after a scoreless opening 45 minutes. Alonso noted that the hosts gained better control after the interval, aided by a standout performance from Brazil winger Estêvão Willian on his first league start of the season. The victory moved Chelsea into fourth place in the table overnight.

Regarding the possibility of a relegation battle, Carrick acknowledged the league position while emphasizing the tight margins in the standings. “You can look at it like that, and you can look at how far you can move up the league quite quickly if you win football matches,” Carrick said.
