Android March Update: Lost Luggage Tracking, Pixel Features & More

Google Enhances Android with New Features and Streamlined Luggage Tracking

March brings a wave of updates from Google aimed at improving the Android experience, ranging from enhanced communication tools to more convenient ways to track lost luggage. While some features are exclusive to Pixel devices, many are rolling out to all Android users, regardless of manufacturer.

Enhanced Communication and Convenience Features

Google is introducing several improvements designed to make everyday tasks easier for Android users. These include:

  • Location Sharing in Google Messages: Users can now share their current location directly within the Google Messages app.
  • Interactive Google Play Store Shorts: Short videos showcasing features of games and apps are now available on the Google Play Store, allowing users to preview content before downloading.
  • Calling Cards: A new system-wide feature allows users to customize the information others see when they receive a call through the Google Phone app.
  • Gboard Emoji Creation: The Gboard keyboard now allows for the creation of new emoji using unconventional combinations.
  • “Teacher Approved” Games on Android Auto: New games designed for children aged 3-12 are now available on Android Auto, providing entertainment during parked car rides.

Streamlined Luggage Tracking with Airline Integration

Google is expanding the functionality of its Uncover My Device network to include luggage tracking. Users can now securely share the location of locators compatible with the Search Center service with select airlines. This feature mirrors the functionality offered by Apple’s AirTag system.

If luggage is lost during air travel, users can generate a secure link displaying its last known location and share it with the airline via the location sharing menu. The link expires after seven days or when the phone detects the suitcase has been recovered. Locator data is encrypted and users can stop sharing their location at any time.

Currently, ten global airlines support this feature, with plans for further expansion:

  • Air India
  • China Airlines
  • Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Swiss International Airlines)
  • Saudia Airlines
  • Scandinavian Airlines
  • Turkish Airlines

Pixel and Pixel Watch Updates

In addition to the broader Android updates, Pixel devices are receiving exclusive enhancements:

  • Circle to Search Enhancements: The Circle to Search feature can now recognize specific clothing items for virtual attempt-ons and identify multiple objects within a single image.
  • Now Playing App: The music recognition feature, Now Playing, is being released as a standalone app for improved clarity and access to search history.
  • Sports Score Updates on Lock Screen: Pixel devices can now display real-time sports scores on the lock screen (availability may vary by region).

Pixel Watch users will also benefit from new features:

  • Express Payments: A new gesture control feature allows for quick payments with the Pixel Watch 2 and later models without opening the Wallet app (requires manual activation).
  • Emergency SOS: The Pixel Watch now supports earthquake alerts and satellite emergency calls, available in Europe and the Czech Republic.
  • Find My Phone: The watch will notify users if they abandon their Android phone behind and automatically lock it when out of Bluetooth range.

These updates will roll out to supported devices throughout March.
