Animal Nutrition in Argentina: Industry Trends and CAENA’s 10th Congress

Argentina’s animal nutrition industry produces approximately 35 million tons of feed annually for both small and large animals, according to the Cámara Argentina de Empresas de Nutrición Animal (CAENA). Representing a sophisticated sector that processes local grain harvests into specialized animal diets, the industry exports about 10% of its total production to regional markets and Central America, driven by strong agricultural resources and technological infrastructure.

The Production Chain and Market Reach

The animal nutrition sector operates through a comprehensive supply chain that begins directly in agricultural fields with grain cultivation, harvesting, storage, and commercialization. According to CAENA general manager Sebastián Dates, raw grains are processed in specialized feed plants to manufacture diets for diverse species before reaching commercial channels such as supermarkets, online stores, and specialized pet shops.

Specialized pet stores have expanded rapidly across urban centers. These retailers often provide toys, collars, and expert product recommendations from knowledgeable staff, catering to pet owners seeking premium care products.

Drivers in Protein Production and Large Animals

The broader animal nutrition market benefits directly from domestic livestock production, encompassing beef, poultry, eggs, and dairy. By supplying scientifically formulated diets, the industry transforms plant protein into animal protein for domestic consumption and export markets.

For large animals, particularly beef cattle, demand remains robust. International buyers in Europe, the United States, and Asia increasingly require heavier steers that undergo longer feeding periods. Meeting these export standards relies heavily on two primary variables: animal genetics and advanced animal nutrition, according to CAENA data.

Sector Outlook and Upcoming Industry Events

While consumer market shifts have influenced pet food sales—causing some families to substitute premium brands with more economical alternatives—overall product quality remains high across categories. Looking toward the latter half of the year, industry stakeholders anticipate stable operational conditions.

To address sector developments, CAENA will host its 10th Animal Nutrition Congress on October 22 at the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange (Bolsa de Cereales de Buenos Aires). The event will feature cross-sector panels covering economics, meat markets, sustainability, carbon footprints, and biosecurity during morning sessions, followed by specialized afternoon tracks dedicated to poultry, beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, and pet nutrition.
