Apple Unveils M5 Pro and M5 Max Chips, Latest MacBook Pro Models
Apple has introduced the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, alongside updated 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, promising significant performance gains and enhanced AI capabilities. The new chips, built on a new Apple-designed Fusion Architecture, aim to supercharge professional workflows.
New Chip Architecture and Performance
The M5 Pro and M5 Max feature an 18-core CPU architecture, incorporating six “super cores” – Apple’s highest-performing CPU core design – and twelve performance cores. This configuration is expected to deliver up to a 30 percent increase in CPU performance for professional applications. Apple Newsroom
The GPU has also been significantly upgraded, scaling up to a 40-core design. Each GPU core now includes a Neural Accelerator, and increased unified memory bandwidth results in over four times the peak GPU compute for AI tasks compared to the previous generation. Graphics performance is improved by up to 35 percent for applications utilizing ray tracing, compared to the M4 Pro and M4 Max. Apple Newsroom
Enhanced Memory and Storage
The M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory with a throughput of 307 GB/s, while the M5 Max can be configured with up to 128GB of unified memory and a throughput of 614 GB/s. SSD storage is up to twice as rapid as the previous generation, with base configurations starting at 1TB for the M5 Pro and 2TB for the M5 Max. Apple Newsroom
MacBook Pro Updates
The new MacBook Pro models feature the Apple N1 chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for improved wireless performance, and reliability. Battery life is rated for up to 24 hours, a significant improvement over previous Intel-based models (up to 13 hours longer) and a three-hour increase over M1 models. The laptop can be charged to 50 percent capacity in 30 minutes using a 96W or higher USB-C adapter. Apple Newsroom
The Liquid Retina XDR display remains, with an optional nanotexture option. Connectivity options include three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI (supporting up to 8K resolution), an SDXC card slot, and MagSafe 3 charging. The new MacBook Pro also includes a 12MP Center Stage camera, studio-quality microphones, and a six-speaker sound system. Apple Newsroom
