Apple's iPhone Duo Fails Durability Test as High Repair Costs Emerge

Apple’s new $1,999 iPhone Duo has drawn intense scrutiny ahead of its Friday launch following a severe durability failure during stress testing by reviewer JerryRigEverything, alongside warnings from retail staff and revelations about steep repair pricing.

iPhone Duo Fails Durability Testing

“I’ve been testing these folding phones since the first generation seven years ago – most do survive,” said Nelson, the reviewer behind the JerryRigEverything channel. “The iPhone Duo did not.” During the test, dust entered the hinge and overwhelmed the holding magnets, while a subsequent bend test caused the inner display to fracture and show permanent vertical green lines before losing touch functionality entirely. The device’s outer Ceramic Shield 2 screen scratched at level 7 on the Mohs scale, whereas the inner screen scratched at level 2, though Nelson credited its matte nano-texture coating for making marks disappear.

Retail staff discourage walk-in buyers amid supply constraints

Apple retail employees have been instructed to discourage customers without pre-orders from coming in, MacRumors reported. Staff were advised that there will likely be no iPhone Duo stock available for walk-in purchases on launch day. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman criticized the pre-order rollout in his Power On newsletter, calling Apple’s decision to launch pre-orders despite known severe supply constraints a “major mistake.” Meanwhile, iPhone Duos are already selling at big markups on eBay.

Hinge remains stiff after thousands of automated folds

In contrast to the single-bend catastrophe, a separate durability test conducted by tech journalist Joanna Stern and hardware designer Aron Cohen put the iPhone Duo through an automated folding machine named “Hingey.” After 32,640 automated folds, physical measurements showed the hinge was actually slightly stiffer rather than loose. Ahead of the hardware rollout, Apple updated the App Store backend with screenshots showing built-in applications running in landscape mode on the folding display.

AppleCare+ reduces high inner display repair fees

Repair pricing details reveal that replacing a broken inner display on the iPhone Duo costs $999 without an extended warranty. Gizmodo noted that Apple’s “other damage” category—which covers bent enclosures—carries a $1,499 fee, while battery replacements cost $229. Purchasing AppleCare+ significantly reduces these out-of-pocket accident fees, capping inner display repairs at $99 and outer display fixes at $29.

What happens to the iPhone Duo hinge after thousands of folds?

After undergoing 32,640 automated folds in a stress test by tech journalist Joanna Stern and hardware designer Aron Cohen, the hinge measured slightly stiffer rather than losing its structural tension.

Will Apple stores have iPhone Duo stock for walk-in buyers on launch day?

MacRumors reported that Apple retail employees have been instructed to discourage customers without pre-orders from coming in, as a combination of high demand and limited supply means Apple might not have any available for walk-up customers.
