Ice Dogs Face Crucial Series Against Anchorage with Playoff Implications

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs return to the Big Dipper Ice Arena this weekend for a critical series against the Anchorage Wolverines, with significant implications for the Club 49 Cup standings and playoff positioning. The teams will face off on Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

Wolverines Pose a Growing Threat

Anchorage is currently pushing for a playoff spot in the Midwest Division and has been improving its performance throughout the season. “They’re climbing right now and getting healthier,” said Ice Dogs Head Coach Dakota Bell. “They’re battling for a playoff spot. We understand they’re going to come in here desperate and ready to play.”

Every Game Matters Down the Stretch

With only a limited number of games remaining in the regular season, Coach Bell emphasized the importance of each contest. “When you have about 10 games left in the year, every game just means so much. You seek to control your own destiny and make sure you’re doing things the right way down the stretch.”

Momentum on Fairbanks’ Side

Fairbanks enters the series with momentum after a successful road sweep of the Kenai River Brown Bears, gaining four points in the standings and strengthening their position in the in-state rivalry. The team has been focused on refining the details necessary for success as the season progresses. “Our preparation for the weekend was focused on the details and trying to find the extra five to 10 percent that’s required to win in this league at this time of year. Our guys went in with that mentality and executed it,” Bell explained.

Roberts Earns League Recognition

The Ice Dogs’ recent success has been bolstered by strong special teams play and the standout performance of goaltender Miles Roberts, who was named NAHL Midwest Division Star of the Week after allowing just one goal during the series against Kenai River. Bell highlighted Roberts’ veteran presence and consistent performance. “He approaches the game like a pro. His mentality is really strong. He doesn’t receive too far up or too far down when things go well or poorly. He’s a calming presence for us back there.”

Home Ice Advantage

Fairbanks will play the majority of its remaining regular-season games at the Big Dipper Ice Arena, and Coach Bell believes utilizing home-ice advantage will be crucial. “You’ve got to protect home ice. To have most of our remaining weekends at home is huge for us. We want to take advantage of that with our fans behind us.”

Rivalry Intensifies Playoff Atmosphere

The longstanding rivalry between Fairbanks and Anchorage adds another layer of intensity to the series. “It’s Fairbanks versus Anchorage. That rivalry goes back a long time and it always feels like playoff hockey when we play them,” Bell said.
