Atlanta Artist Melissa A. Mitchell Unveils ‘Trefoil Trail’ Mural for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Atlanta-based artist Melissa A. Mitchell has completed the “Trefoil Trail,” a massive 10,000-square-foot mural spanning the 17th Street Bridge in Midtown Atlanta. Commissioned with the City of Atlanta as part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the project serves as a public art installation connecting Midtown to Atlantic Station.

The mural, which was officially finished on April 11, was facilitated by J’Aimeka “Jai” Ferrell, the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta.

The installation covers more than 10,000 square feet. Mitchell, the founder of Abeille Creations, utilized an intensive 30-to-40-day production timeline to complete the work. The project required significant logistical coordination, including the hiring of additional crews to meet the scale of the commission and navigating Atlanta’s unpredictable spring weather patterns.

Community Engagement and Cultural Significance

The Trefoil Trail was designed as a collaborative effort. Mitchell reports that more than 200 Girl Scouts contributed to the project, with participants earning a custom Trefoil Trail Mural Project badge. The initiative aimed to introduce young scouts to professional artistic careers and the process of executing large-scale civic commissions.

The project’s unveiling featured a celebration involving a marching band and appearances by city officials, including Mayor Andre Dickens. By integrating community participation, the mural serves as a reflection of the city’s Black culture for the international visitors expected to arrive during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
