“Avendroot” Brings Dark Humor and Secrets to the Stage in Osterholz-Scharmbeck

Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Germany – The Theater in OHZ (TiO) is set to premiere its new plattdeutsch (Low German) comedy, “Avendroot,” on Saturday, February 28th, 2026, at Gut Sandbeck. The play offers a glimpse into the lives of three senior women – Marie, Agnes, and Fine – residing at the “Avendroot” senior residence, exploring themes of aging, memory, and hidden secrets with a touch of dark humor.

A Look Inside “Avendroot”

The play portrays the daily routines of Marie, Agnes, and Fine, filled with activities like crocheting, watching TV quiz shows, and attending funerals. However, beneath the surface of everyday life, complex stories unfold. Fine, a former celebrated performer, grapples with a fading career, while Agnes’ reality blurs with her past due to the onset of dementia. Marie dedicates herself to caring for both women.

New Faces and Unexpected Twists

The arrival of a new caregiver, Patrick, adds an unexpected element to the residents’ lives. Patrick, who openly admits he’d prefer a prison sentence to working in a nursing home, initially shocks with his direct manner. He quickly endears himself to the women, even finding himself in an impromptu strip poker game where he’s deemed “a really nice guy” by the experienced residents. The play too introduces Bruno, a charming suitor, and Natalie, whose presence brings long-buried secrets to light.

“Avendroot,” written by Folke Braband and directed by Astrid Gries, will have a total of 15 performances. The premiere on February 28th will be followed by shows on March 1st, 5th, 6th, 8th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 20th, 22nd, 25th, 27th and 29th, 2026. Performances on March 5th, 6th, 8th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 20th, 22nd, 25th, 27th and 29th begin at 8:00 PM, while performances on March 1st and 15th begin at 4:00 PM.
