Gangwon Province Embraces Lifestyle Leisure and Eco-Tourism

Gangwon Province, South Korea, is strategically expanding its leisure and tourism offerings, moving beyond traditional competition-focused events to embrace a lifestyle-centered approach that integrates citizen participation, education, and ecological experiences. A comprehensive plan, spearheaded by the Gangwon Chuncheon Leisure and Taekwondo Organizing Committee, aims to establish the region as a dynamic leisure city for both residents and visitors.

Expanding Leisure Activities for All

The organizing committee will operate four key projects: the Citizen Leisure Academy, the Chuncheon Leisure Competition, Citizen Leisure Events, and Leisure Tourism. With an anticipated participation of approximately 17,000 individuals this year, the initiative builds upon 18 years of existing leisure programs, focusing on increased citizen involvement and the development of a robust lake leisure culture.

Citizen Leisure Academy: From Experience to Expertise

The Citizen Leisure Academy provides a tiered system of engagement, starting with experiential programs and progressing to instructional courses and competitive leagues. Offerings include BMX racing, wooden canoeing, paddleboarding, water skiing, wakeboarding, skateboarding, Songam riding, and windsurfing. The wooden canoe program is set for expansion, aiming to accommodate 2,000 participants.

Chuncheon Leisure Competition: A Shift Towards Enjoyment

The Chuncheon Leisure Competition is being reimagined as a lifestyle-focused event, designed for broad participation and enjoyment. The schedule includes five leisure competitions and six civic leisure events throughout the season. Sports featured will include skateboarding, trail running, gran fondo, sunset marathon, and BMX racing. Citizen-focused events, such as the Deep Water Festival, Paddleboard Festa, yoga and canoeing experiences, Kids Leisure Challenge, and Physical Culture 300, will as well be expanded. The Paddleboard Festa will be a latest event, held on inland waters to promote safe water leisure activities, and a Sunset Marathon will be introduced as a seasonal offering.

Eco-Tourism and Educational Partnerships

Leisure tourism is being integrated into an ‘Eco Series’ that includes eco-tours combining bicycle rides, canoeing, and trekking around Carp Island. Additional options include guided eco-rides around Uiam Lake and eco-packing experiences that combine cycling and camping. The goal is to encourage longer stays and boost domestic tourism.

Collaboration with educational institutions is also a priority. The Citizen Leisure Academy and leisure tourism programs will be linked with classes at the Chuncheon Campus of Korea Polytechnic University. Hallym University’s RISE Project Group will focus on training leisure tourism guides. The ‘One School, One Leisure Program’ will continue to provide safe leisure experiences for elementary, middle, and high school students, and a residential participation program will be maintained for international students at Kangwon National University.

Year-Round Operation and Future Development

The leisure programs will operate year-round, with leisure tourism beginning in March, the Citizen Leisure Academy running from April to February of the following year, and the Chuncheon Leisure Competition taking place from May to November. This structure builds upon a successful model established in the previous year, which saw approximately 14,000 participants nationwide. The organizing committee plans to refine its programs based on performance evaluations and further promote a leisure culture accessible to both citizens and tourists.

According to an official from the organizing committee, “We will further spread a leisure culture that can be enjoyed by both citizens and visitors through a structure where experience, education, and tourism are naturally connected.”
