Thomas Markle Jnr named person of interest in Philippine child abuse probe
Thomas Markle Jnr, the half-brother of the Duchess of Sussex, has been named a person of interest in an ongoing investigation into a large collection of alleged child abuse images discovered in the Philippines, the Irish Independent reported.
Philippine Interior and Local Government Secretary Juanito Victor ‘Jonvic’ Remulla announced during a press conference on October 5 that authorities have identified “signs” suggesting the 60-year-old’s involvement in the matter. Remulla clarified that while the son is a person of interest, he is not currently a suspect as investigators work to verify the information.
Authorities recover thousands of images and video
The investigation follows reports from last month that Thomas Markle Jnr discovered a stash of alleged child sexual abuse material among the belongings of his father, Thomas Markle Snr, at a former residence in Cebu City. reports that Markle Jnr claimed to have found “hundreds, if not thousands” of images in four boxes.
Secretary Remulla detailed the scale of the recovered material, stating that investigators found 7,500 photos and one video. The images reportedly depict male and female children of Asian, Latina, and European descent, with ages appearing to be around ten to eleven years old. Remulla described the collection as a “deplorable display of impunity” and a “really, really disturbing” discovery.
In addition to the digital files, authorities are investigating six mobile phones originating from the United States. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is assisting in determining if the SIM cards within those devices are registered to Thomas Markle Snr.
Thomas Markle Snr denies possession of material
Thomas Markle Snr, 82, has vehemently denied the allegations. While he admitted to paying for sex in the Philippines, he denied ever possessing a collection of such material. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he characterized his son’s claims as “sick lies,” telling the outlet, “I could never do what I’m being accused of. It’s the worst thing anyone could accuse me of.”
The investigation faces potential logistical hurdles as Markle Snr has been moved into a care home for dementia patients in the United States. This move has raised concerns that the FBI may be unable to conduct a formal interview with him.

The investigation also involves a prior connection to UK authorities. The Irish Independent reported that the Metropolitan Police recently referred itself to a police watchdog regarding a 2019 letter. The letter raised concerns about the security of the Duchess of Sussex but, according to the force, did not contain specific security information, instead containing claims regarding “alleged offending outside the United Kingdom.” The Met stated the letter was passed to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their awareness.
Thomas Markle Jnr has expressed a desire for the matter to proceed through the legal system, telling The Sun, “I’m hoping that my father ends up in court either here, or most likely, back home in the US to face justice.”
