Amazon Cloud Capacity Largely Sold Out Through 2027
Amazon Web Services has largely sold out the vast majority of its cloud computing capacity through 2027, with substantial commitments already extending into 2028, as surging demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure strains data center resources. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy revealed the capacity constraints during a video podcast appearance with Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Ben Horowitz and general partner Erik Torenberg, investing.com reported.
The supply bottlenecks persist despite Amazon’s aggressive capital expenditure plans, which total approximately $220 billion for 2026. Jassy noted that available cloud capacity for 2026 is fully committed, most large allocations for 2027 are reserved, and a significant portion of 2028 capacity is already accounted for by enterprise customers and AI developers training and deploying models.
AWS reserves computing resources for on-demand customers
The intense capital deployment reflects competition among major cloud providers to secure and expand AI infrastructure ahead of anticipated customer demand. Despite the long-term commitments, AWS continues to reserve computing resources for on-demand customers using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Amazon Bedrock. EC2 supplies scalable cloud servers for standard business workloads, while Bedrock gives developers access to various artificial intelligence models for building generative AI applications.
This dual approach allows AWS to maintain access for clients requiring flexible computing resources even as long-term contracts lock up the bulk of its hardware.
Earnings report will detail AWS growth and expenditure
The upcoming earnings report is expected to provide specific details regarding AWS growth rates, capital expenditure totals, and further plans for capacity expansion.
