A Historic Return to Indian Wells
Venus Williams, 45, has accepted a wildcard to compete in both singles and doubles at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open, beginning March 1, 2026. This return signifies a personal and symbolic step forward for the tennis legend and the sport as a whole. The tournament, often called the “fifth Grand Slam,” boasts the second-largest tennis venue in the world, with a stadium court holding 16,000 fans. Williams expressed her excitement about returning to California and playing in front of the fans.
Ayan’s Aces: Expanding Access and Representation
Ayan Broomfield, a former college tennis player and partner of Frances Tiafoe, founded Ayan’s Aces to address the lack of Black representation in tennis. The initiative aims to provide opportunities for Black women to experience and engage with the sport. Broomfield noticed a lack of diversity in the stands whereas traveling with Tiafoe and felt compelled to create a space for Black women within the tennis community.
Ayan’s Aces has grown from a small effort to provide tickets to a larger movement, with activations at the US Open and Miami Open preceding the Indian Wells event. Broomfield emphasizes the importance of individuals sharing their experiences and expanding the community of women interested in tennis.
Addressing Barriers to Entry and Discrimination
Broomfield highlights the financial barriers to entry in tennis, citing the high cost of equipment and access to facilities, particularly indoor courts in colder climates. She also acknowledges the discrimination experienced by players and supporters on social media, noting the importance of strong support systems like her partnership with Frances Tiafoe.
The Significance of Indian Wells
Hosting Ayan’s Aces at Indian Wells holds particular significance given the tournament’s history with Serena Williams, who boycotted the event for 14 years following a racially charged incident in 2001. Broomfield believes that utilizing this space to create opportunities for women of color is a powerful statement.

Ayan’s Aces’ collaboration with Lululemon has been instrumental in expanding the initiative’s reach. Broomfield praised Lululemon’s commitment to supporting individuals whose values align with the brand. Looking ahead, Broomfield envisions expanding Ayan’s Aces globally, bringing Black women to prestigious tournaments like Wimbledon, the French Open, and the Australian Open.
