Bangsamoro Government Addresses Rising Fuel Costs and Economic Strain
Cotabato City—The Bangsamoro Government convened an emergency Cabinet Meeting on March 20, 2026, to address the escalating fuel prices and their impact on essential commodities throughout the region. The meeting focused on developing a unified response to mitigate the economic strain on Bangsamoro families amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Chief Minister Macacua Acknowledges Economic Impact
Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua expressed concern over the rising cost of fuel, emphasizing its direct effect on the daily lives of residents. “The rising cost of fuel is not merely reflected in numbers on a board; it directly affects the daily lives of our people through higher prices of food, transportation, electricity and other basic necessities,” Macacua stated according to the Bangsamoro Government.
Short-Term and Long-Term Mitigation Strategies
Macacua directed all Bangsamoro ministries, offices, and agencies to submit contingency plans to lessen the crisis’s impact. An inter-agency task force will be established to oversee the implementation of these plans. Short-term solutions include targeted subsidies and fuel assistance for vulnerable sectors such as transportation, agriculture, and low-income households.
Price Monitoring and Supply Assurance
The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) has initiated a region-wide fuel price monitoring program to verify pump calibrations and ensure price transparency at retail outlets. MENRE is also coordinating with the Department of Energy (DOE) to maintain energy security and enforce fair business practices as reported by the Bangsamoro Government. The ministry recently refuted claims of a fuel shortage, assuring the public of a stable supply.
Focus on Sustainable Energy Solutions
Macacua underscored the importance of long-term solutions to reduce reliance on imported fuel. “We must pursue lasting and sustainable solutions. This includes accelerating investments in renewable energy, promoting energy efficiency, and reducing our dependence on imported fuel,” he said. This initiative aligns with the Bangsamoro Energy Master Plan, a roadmap for advancing clean, sustainable, and energy-secure development in the region.
Moral Governance and Regional Stability
With the meeting coinciding with the end of Ramadhan, Macacua also urged officials to uphold the principles of Moral Governance, emphasizing the importance of integrity and service to the public.
The Bangsamoro Government is also monitoring the safety of its overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the Middle East, urging them to prioritize their safety and follow official advisories issued by Philippine embassies and consular offices as reported by GMA Network.
