Blackmagic Camera for iOS 3.3 Introduces Apple Watch Control and ATEM Integration

Blackmagic Design has released version 3.3 of its Blackmagic Camera app for iOS, introducing new capabilities that extend the iPhone’s role in professional video production. The update, announced on April 15, 2026, adds support for camera control and monitoring using an Apple Watch, deeper integration with ATEM switchers, and compatibility with Blackmagic Focus and Zoom Demands.

Apple Watch Enables Remote Camera Control

The headline feature of Blackmagic Camera for iOS 3.3 is a new companion app for Apple Watch, allowing users to start and stop recording, check framing, and monitor audio levels directly from their wrist. This functionality is particularly useful when the iPhone is mounted in hard-to-reach positions, such as on rigs, gimbals, or overhead setups, where physical interaction with the device could be tricky or introduce unwanted camera movement.

According to Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, the Apple Watch companion app supports professional workflows by enabling full camera control from a wearable device. The app displays the viewfinder, timecode, focus settings, resolution, battery life, audio input levels, and a record toggle on the Apple Watch screen. Users can swipe to indicate or hide on-screen information and switch between iPhone lenses using the Digital Crown.

ATEM Integration Expands Live Production Capabilities

Blackmagic Camera for iOS 3.3 adds support for ATEM camera control when paired with the Blackmagic Camera ProDock and connected to an ATEM Mini switcher. This setup allows users to send video, tally, and camera control over a single HDMI connection. Operators can adjust settings such as ISO, white balance, and shutter remotely via ATEM Software Control while triggering recording and managing camera parameters as part of a live production workflow.

The update also includes support for full-screen portrait mode via HDMI output, facilitating vertical video creation for social media and mobile-first platforms.

Support for Professional Focus and Zoom Controls

Version 3.3 introduces compatibility with Blackmagic Focus and Zoom Demands, enabling precise, tactile control over lens functions when used with compatible hardware. This feature supports studio-style workflows by allowing focus and zoom adjustments through external devices, enhancing precision during shoots.

Availability and Compatibility

Blackmagic Camera for iOS 3.3 is available as a free update on the App Store for compatible iPhone models. The app continues to offer professional-grade features such as manual controls for focus, exposure, ISO, shutter speed, and white balance, along with support for Blackmagic RAW and HDR video recording.

The Apple Watch companion app requires watchOS 9 or later and pairs with the iPhone running Blackmagic Camera 3.3 or later. ATEM camera control functionality depends on the Blackmagic Camera ProDock and compatibility with ATEM Mini switchers.

Industry Context

The release of Blackmagic Camera for iOS 3.3 aligns with the growing use of smartphones in professional video production. By integrating with wearable devices and live production switchers, Blackmagic Design aims to expand the iPhone’s utility beyond casual filming into broadcast, cinema, and live event environments.

As part of its broader ecosystem, Blackmagic Design continues to develop accessories and software that bridge mobile devices with traditional professional gear, supporting flexible, cost-effective workflows for independent creators and production teams alike.
