Dru Brown and Winnipeg Blue Bombers Overcome Toronto Argonauts in Eastern Semi-Final

Dru Brown connected with Nic Demski for a 23-yard touchdown pass with just 44 seconds remaining, rallying the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 25-22 victory over the Toronto Argonauts in the East Division semifinal on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field. The dramatic finish sent the Blue Bombers to the division final for the fifth time in six years.

Winnipeg capitalized on a late fumble by Toronto punt returner Janarion Grant, which former Argo Thiadric Hansen recovered, setting the Bombers up at the Toronto 52-yard line. After the winning score, Brown hit Demski for a two-point conversion to secure a three-point cushion. The visiting Blue Bombers finished fourth in the West with a 9-9 record and crossed over to the East playoffs under the league’s crossover format established in 1996.

Injuries to Starting Quarterbacks Shape the Playoff Matchup

The Blue Bombers played without Zach Collaros, who suffered a rib injury during Winnipeg’s regular-season finale win over the B.C. Lions. Dru Brown stepped in to make his second career playoff start, completing 18 of 30 passes for 206 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Toronto faced its own quarterback disruption when Chad Kelly left the game midway through the fourth quarter with an apparent right shoulder injury after taking pressure on a completed pass. Kelly, who had not thrown in a game since suffering a hand injury on Sept. 27, finished the day completing 18 of 30 passes for 193 yards and one touchdown. Nick Arbuckle replaced Kelly down the stretch, completing two of six passes for 25 yards.

Missed Opportunities and Defensive Scores Keep Game Close

Despite forcing four turnovers—two interceptions and two fumbles—the Toronto offense struggled to capitalize in enemy territory, managing only three field goals from Lirim Hajrullahu in the first half and early second half. The Argonauts led 16-10 at halftime, but left points on the board after stalling inside Winnipeg territory following turnovers.

Winnipeg stayed within striking distance thanks to a standout defensive play late in the third quarter. Defensive lineman Michael Fletcher knocked the ball from Kelly’s hand, and David Reese scooped it up, returning the fumble 52 yards for a touchdown that narrowed Toronto’s lead to 19-17. Ontaria Wilson also contributed a spectacular 32-yard, one-handed touchdown grab in the first quarter for the Blue Bombers, while Tyler Kahmann scored Toronto’s lone offensive touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Kelly.

Upcoming Matchup in Montreal for the East Title

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers advance to face the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern Final on Nov. 7 in Montreal. The Alouettes and Blue Bombers split their two regular-season meetings, with Winnipeg winning 44-28 in Week 13 before Montreal took a 37-10 victory in Week 18. Winnipeg enters the next round seeking to avenge a loss to Montreal in the previous season’s Eastern Semi-Final.
