Bobby Smith Enters Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

Bobby Smith, a Rider University men’s soccer alumnus, was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday night, marking the latest honor for a career that helped shape professional soccer in the United States during the 1970s.

Smith collected 46 goals and 112 career points during his four seasons with the Rider Broncs. In 1971, he scored 16 goals to set a single-season program record that stood until 1997. “I wouldn’t have gotten here without Rider giving me a scholarship,” Smith told Rider University. “I played four years at Rider, and I had some success there. I was drafted by the Philadelphia Atoms from Rider, so I wouldn’t have made it to professional soccer if it wasn’t for Rider.”

From Rider University to the North American Soccer League

After graduating from Rider, Smith quickly transitioned to the professional ranks. He was selected by the Philadelphia Atoms in the North American Soccer League. As a rookie, he earned second-team All-NASL status and helped the Atoms win the 1973 NASL championship.

By 1975, Smith stood out as the only American-born and trained player among the 33-team contingent of NASL first-team, second-team, and honorable-mention standouts. He later joined the New York Cosmos, where he played as a starting fullback alongside Brazil’s Pelé. Smith won NASL titles with the Cosmos in 1977 and 1978, making him one of only three players with three NASL championship rings.

On the international stage, Smith featured on 18 occasions with the United States Men’s National Team. His national team career began in 1973 following his first NASL title and lasted through 1980.

Decades of Athletic Recognition

Thursday’s induction adds to a long list of career accolades for Smith. Rider University previously inducted Smith into the Rider Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997, and the men’s soccer team retired his No. 10 jersey in 2007. Later that same year, he earned induction into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

“So, in eight months I went from the Rider College team to being on the best professional team in the country,” Smith reflected on his rapid ascent to Rider University. “So, it was quite a step, and I wouldn’t have done that without Rider.”
