Nuremberg’s Max-Morlock Stadion Redevelopment Faces Budget Shortfall, Plans Scaled Back

Nuremberg’s plans for the redevelopment of Max-Morlock-Stadion have hit a snag, with an audit revealing a €100 million budget shortfall. This has prompted city officials, and 1. FC Nürnberg to significantly scale back the project, focusing on the core stadium infrastructure and abandoning plans for additional facilities.

Financial Challenges and Revised Plans

Initial estimates projected a cost of €30 million each from subsidies, loans, and contributions from the club and the city. However, a recent audit conducted by EY revealed that projected annual revenue from stadium operations would be approximately €10 million lower than previously anticipated, creating a substantial financial gap over a ten-year period. StadiumDB.com reports that this discovery has led to a reassessment of the project’s scope.

Mayor Christian Vogel expressed disappointment with the way the information became public but affirmed the commitment to proceed with the redevelopment, albeit in a more streamlined manner. The original vision included a modern sports complex encompassing a football stadium, a hotel, a conference center, and an underground car park. Now, the focus will be solely on the sports facility itself.

Project Management and Future Outlook

The city of Nuremberg has awarded PROPROJEKT the project management services for the next phases of the complete renovation, following an EU-wide tendering process. Mondo Stadia details that Proprojekt prevailed in a competitive bidding process due to its competence, structure, and experience.

The city council has established a strict budget limit that cannot be exceeded. Whereas the ultimate design of the novel stadium remains uncertain, the council intends to draw inspiration from other modern Bundesliga stadiums while adapting to the financial constraints. The project management team will focus on coordinating deadlines, costs, and processes, and identifying potential risks.

Stadium History and Current Status

Max-Morlock-Stadion, opened in 1928, has been the home stadium of 1. FC Nürnberg since 1966. Wikipedia notes that the stadium hosted six football matches during the 1972 Summer Olympics and five games during the 2006 FIFA World Cup, including the notable Portugal-Netherlands match. The stadium currently has a capacity of 50,000 for league matches and 44,308 for international matches.

The City of Nuremberg and 1. FC Nuremberg are committed to the complete renovation of the stadium, as confirmed by Coliseum Online.
