Rybakina Secures Year-End Number One Ranking in Tokyo

World number one Elena Rybakina secured the year-end women’s singles top ranking by defeating compatriot Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 in the last 16 of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday. The straight-sets victory ensures the 27-year-old cannot be overtaken in the closing weeks of the 2026 season, capping a stellar year that included title wins at the Australian Open and the US Open. The match lasted 70 minutes, during which Rybakina served six aces and produced 25 winners while saving the only break point she faced. “Today the serve definitely helped me in the important moments,” Rybakina said. “I was just trying to pick my spot and I think today with a closed roof and a combination of the balls and the court made me feel better serving.”

Team Effort and Historic Season Milestone

The Moscow-born player arrived in Tokyo following a title victory at the Ningbo Open in China last week. Having received a first-round bye at the Pan Pacific Open, her second-round win over world number 67 Putintseva cemented her status at the summit of the women’s game. Rybakina usurped Aryna Sabalenka as world number one in September after defeating the Belarusian in the finals of both Melbourne and New York Grand Slam events, following a quarter-final win over China’s Zheng Qinwen at Flushing Meadows.

Reflecting on her ascent to the year-end top spot, Rybakina said, “It means a lot. This is something we worked for with the team.” She added: “So many great players and we are all really close to each other, and I’m happy that now with last week and with today’s win I made it possible to secure number one at the end of the year. It’s an amazing achievement and hopefully we can continue this way next year.”

Quarter-Final Showdown Against Fernandez

Rybakina advances to the Tokyo quarter-finals where she will face Canada’s Leylah Fernandez. The two previously met in the Ningbo Open final, a match Rybakina won 6-2, 6-2. Away from the court, the top seed noted she has taken up a new hobby while traveling on tour, stating that her coach introduced her to collecting Pokémon cards.

Following the tournament in Japan, Rybakina’s schedule points toward the defense of her singles title at the season-ending WTA Finals. That tournament is scheduled to take place from November 8 to 15 at Indian Wells.
