Snapchat Brings Back 2D Comic Bitmoji for Subscribers

Snapchat has launched Comic Bitmoji, a new feature that allows Snapchat+ subscribers to view and send Bitmoji avatars in a 2D, comic-inspired style. This update responds to long-standing user demand for a nostalgic alternative to the platform’s current 3D avatars.

According to Snap’s official announcement, Comic Bitmoji is designed as a filter-like setting that reimagines the same customizable 3D avatar infrastructure into a 2D format reminiscent of Bitmoji’s early comic strip origins. Subscribers can enable the style to see all Bitmoji in their app in 2D and send stickers reflecting this look to friends.

The feature launched on November 10, 2025, and is being rolled out to Snapchat+ subscribers over the coming days. Snap emphasized that Bitmoji remains a core part of digital identity, used by over 320 million people globally each day for self-expression in chats, Snap Map, AR Lenses, and more.

While the 3D avatar introduced in 2023 offered enhanced customization—including diverse body types, hairstyles, makeup, and freckles—many users expressed a preference for the simpler, classic 2D design. Thousands of Snapchatters had petitioned for its return, prompting Snap to develop Comic Bitmoji as a way to honor that nostalgia without sacrificing modern functionality.

Comic Bitmoji does not replace the 3D avatar but exists as an optional style within the app, giving users greater flexibility in how they represent themselves. The move reflects Snap’s broader strategy of balancing innovation with user sentiment, particularly around features tied to personal identity and expression.

As of April 16, 2026, Comic Bitmoji is available exclusively to Snapchat+ subscribers, with no indication of plans to extend the feature to free-tier users at this time.
