Brodie Rec League Expands Across North America with Millions in Venture Capital

Brodie Rec League, a recreational basketball organization launched in Burlington in 2020, has grown to encompass 50,000 athletes across 25 North American cities, including Vancouver, Toronto, New York City, and Boston, cbc.ca reported. For a standard $350 sign-up fee, players receive team jerseys and compete as Brodie athletes for the season, gaining access to professional-grade perks off the court.

Venture Funding and Valuation Milestones

On Sept. 29, Brodie announced it had secured $5 million in funding led by Toronto-based Golden Ventures and New York-based Lerer Hippeau, according to cbc.ca. Following an appearance on the Fall 2026 season of Dragon’s Den, the league secured an additional $1.5 million at a $30-million valuation from three investors who acquired a five per cent stake.

Brodie CEO Connor Renton stated that the capital will fund better gym infrastructure and enhance the app infrastructure where user content and player statistics reside. The league’s primary revenue source remains player registrations, though Renton plans to pursue sponsorship and media deals to reduce costs for players over time.

Content Creation and the Creator Economy Business Model

The league distinguishes itself from traditional intramural sports through heavy media production, releasing 15,000 pieces of content weekly, including player action shots and highlight reels. Renton noted that the strategy mimics monetized creator platforms.

Michael Naraine, an associate professor of sport management at Brock University, told cbc.ca that the league appeals to adults by offering an aspirational experience. What they’re selling is the, ‘Hey, you still got it,’ even though these people may have never ‘had it,’ in the first place, Naraine said, adding that investors recognize a high-margin business opportunity in packaging recreational sports as premium experiences.
