BTS to Ignite Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square with ‘ARIRANG’ Comeback Concert
SEOUL, South Korea — BTS will stage its highly anticipated comeback concert on Saturday night at Gwanghwamun Square, a landmark representing Korea’s royal heritage and cultural life. The free concert is expected to draw tens of thousands of fans as the K-pop group performs songs from their first album in nearly four years, “ARIRANG.”
“’ARIRANG’ is an album that embodies the origin and identity of BTS and carries the message that they want to convey now,” Hybe Corp., BTS’s management agency, stated according to the Associated Press.
Gwanghwamun Square: A Symbol of Korea
Gwanghwamun Square is named after the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace, a royal palace of the Joseon dynasty, which ruled Korea for over 500 years. The square is a central hub for cultural events and features statues of King Sejong, inventor of the Korean script, and Admiral Yi Sun-shin, a naval hero.
The square as well holds significance as a site of democratic protests, including recent demonstrations against then-President Yoon Suk Yeol’s policies in late 2024, where protesters blended political expression with K-pop culture as reported by the AP.
Global Reach Through Netflix Livestream
The hourlong concert will be livestreamed globally on Netflix, reaffirming BTS’s position as a group that has expanded from Korea to the world stage. The performance marks the group’s return after a hiatus for mandatory military service in South Korea.
Cultural Significance and Public Impact
Cultural critics suggest that performing at a symbolic Korean site is “most meaningful” for BTS, given their status as K-pop’s biggest stars according to the AP. The selection of Gwanghwamun reflects a belief that Korean traditional culture can resonate globally, mirroring the success of the Oscar-winning film “KPop Demon Hunters.”
Authorities are taking extensive safety measures to prevent crowd-related incidents. Approximately 20,000 ticketed fans will be at the square, with an additional 240,000 expected in nearby areas watching on temporary screens. Roads will be blocked, and subway routes adjusted, including station closures at Gyeongbokgung as detailed by the Seoul City Event Overview.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung called BTS “a proud artist of the Republic of Korea” and expressed hope the concert will showcase the nation’s cultural heritage and K-culture as reported by the AP.
