Bulgaria Allocates €270,000 for Soviet Army Monument Remains

The Bulgarian government, under outgoing Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, has allocated €270,000 to cover costs associated with the remains of the dismantled monument to the Soviet Army in Sofia. The funding, approved by a decision of the Council of Ministers, will be used for scaffolding rental, site security fencing, and security personnel provided by the Sofia regional governor, according to a report by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).

Dismantling and Subsequent Developments

The dismantling of the monument began in late 2023, ordered by then-Sofia regional governor Vyara Todeva. Following the dismantling, Todeva became a deputy of the PP-DB coalition and was later appointed to the Executive Council of the PP after Asen Vassilev remained the sole leader of the party.

Prime Minister Zhelyazkov’s Recent Activities

Prime Minister Zhelyazkov recently participated in a pre-European Council meeting in Belgium on February 12, 2026, focusing on the integration of the single market, trade policy, and EU border security BTA. He is also scheduled to attend the Munich Security Conference on February 13, where he is expected to meet with executives from Rheinmetall AG and Schwarz Group BTA.
