King Frederik’s Greenland Visit Signals Danish Resolve Amidst Trump’s Ambitions
As tensions surrounding potential U.S. Interest in Greenland persist, a visit by Denmark’s King Frederik X to the autonomous territory this week carries significant symbolic weight, reaffirming Denmark’s sovereignty and bolstering morale among Greenlanders. The visit comes after a period of heightened uncertainty sparked by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated expressions of interest in acquiring Greenland.
Royal Visit Amidst Geopolitical Concerns
King Frederik X will visit Greenland from Wednesday, February 18th, to Friday, February 20th, beginning in Nuuk, where he will be received by the Chairman of Naalakkersuisut, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and the Chairman of Inatsisartut, Kim Kielsen. His itinerary includes visits to Maniitsoq and Kangerlussuaq, including a stop at the Arctic Basic Education facility. The trip marks King Frederik’s third visit to Greenland since assuming the throne in January 2024, following in the footsteps of his mother, Queen Margrethe II.
A Message to Washington
The timing of the visit is no coincidence. Experts suggest it’s a deliberate signal to the United States, particularly given Trump’s past rhetoric regarding Greenland. Hilmar Mjelde, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Western Norway, explained to Dagbladet that the visit is crucial for Denmark to underscore its authority over Greenland, especially while Trump remains a political force. “The more clearly Denmark signals sovereignty over Greenland, the higher the political price Trump will have to pay if he decides to craft another push to take over Greenland,” Mjelde stated.
Eirik Løkke, an advisor at Civita, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating a united front. “Greenland is part of the royal house of Denmark, and now it is extra important to show both in Denmark and in Greenland, and to the rest of the world, that this is something that the royal house and Denmark prioritize,” Løkke said. He believes the visit will be well-received by Greenlanders, reinforcing their connection to Denmark.
Trump’s Fascination with Royalty
The visit also takes into account Trump’s well-documented fascination with royalty. Reports indicate Trump has long admired the prestige associated with monarchies, referencing himself as a “king” and expressing admiration for the British royal family. During a state visit to Buckingham Palace in 2019, Trump was reportedly “rarely as happy” as he was that evening, according to Mjelde. This affinity for royal pageantry may factor into Denmark’s strategy of emphasizing the symbolic importance of the monarchy in relation to Greenland.
Recent History of U.S.-Danish Tensions
The current situation stems from Trump’s repeated attempts to discuss acquiring Greenland, beginning in 2019 and resurfacing in 2025. In late 2025 and early 2026, Trump reportedly threatened a 25% import tax on European Union goods unless Denmark ceded Greenland, escalating the diplomatic crisis. While Trump ultimately reversed his position in January 2026 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, pledging not to employ force or tariffs, concerns remain about potential future attempts to influence Greenland’s status.
Greenland’s Autonomy and Future
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, possessing significant self-governance. The island’s future remains a subject of ongoing discussion, with technical talks between Greenland and Denmark underway to explore options and ensure a mutually agreeable path forward. Denmark’s continued engagement and the symbolic gesture of King Frederik’s visit underscore its commitment to maintaining a strong relationship with Greenland.
