German Military Warns of Russian Sabotage Threats Against Domestic Bases and Ukraine Support
The German Bundeswehr has elevated its domestic threat assessment to “significant”—its second-highest level—following intelligence reports indicating a rise in Russian sabotage risks directed at military personnel, facilities, and training sites within Germany. WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung gained access to the report, which was drawn up following suspicious drone discoveries in the country. The report indicates that these occurrences demonstrate that Russia has long possessed the capability and presently exhibits an intensified intent to target Bundeswehr forces and installations, along with partners such as Ukraine within Germany.
Suspicious Drones Target Military Sites
The updated security evaluation stems from recent drone incidents across Germany. In Wunstorf, Lower Saxony, a farmer discovered a crashed drone carrying a tin can packed with explosives. Investigators believe that device was intended to target Bundeswehr aircraft, and they also assume that the drone had been lying near the airport for several years. A similar cluster of explosive-laden drones was recovered in August near the airport in Leipzig, Saxony. While the Leipzig incident could initially be considered an indirect threat to the Bundeswehr, investigators assess that the Wunstorf event necessitates the assumption that the military is directly affected as a target.
Chancellor Merz Cites Society-Wide Risks
Friedrich Merz stated that Russia poses the greatest threat to the country, pointing to ongoing sabotage attempts and airport drone incursions. Merz emphasized that his primary concern centers on foreign influence targeting German society rather than economic pressures, the USA or China, stating: My biggest concern at the moment is Russia’s influence on our society,
according to Die Zeit. Merz noted that these attacks occur every day.
