Cagliari Traffic Disrupted by Road Closures and Football Match

Cagliari experienced significant traffic congestion on Saturday, February 9, 2026, due to a combination of road closures and a Serie A football match. Via Roma was closed to traffic due to a healthcare demonstration, while Via Porcell was too blocked. Simultaneously, fans heading to the Cagliari vs. Roma match at the Unipol Domus stadium began arriving from late morning, exacerbating the situation.

Road Closures Cause Citywide Delays

The closure of Via Roma, a major thoroughfare, stemmed from a demonstration concerning healthcare provisions. This forced motorists to navigate alternative routes, leading to long queues in central neighborhoods. Via Bacaredda was also heavily congested with traffic. Adding to the difficulties, Via Porcell was also closed, further limiting options for drivers.

Football Match Amplifies Congestion

The Serie A match between Cagliari and Roma, which kicked off at 3:00 PM local time, contributed significantly to the traffic problems. Fans began arriving at the Unipol Domus stadium well in advance of the game, increasing traffic volume throughout the city. The match concluded with a 2-0 victory for Roma, with both goals scored by Donyell Malen. Virgilio Sport provided live coverage of the game.

Ongoing Infrastructure Work Adds to Challenges

The existing traffic issues were compounded by ongoing construction projects throughout the city, reducing available road space and parking. The lack of viable alternative transportation solutions further worsened the situation for commuters and residents.

Via Roma Reopening and Improvements

Despite the recent disruptions, Via Roma has undergone significant improvements. After 28 months of work, the road fully reopened in August 2025, with traffic now flowing in both directions. The renovations included wider pedestrian zones and green spaces, aiming to enhance the urban environment and improve accessibility.

Cagliari’s Waterfront Boulevard

Via Roma is Cagliari’s signature waterfront boulevard, connecting the Marina neighborhood with key transport hubs. Known for its porticoes and elegant facades, it is a popular spot for strolls, especially during sunset.
