A powerful winter storm continuing to batter California has claimed the lives of eight people, including a skier, and left one person missing near Lake Tahoe. The tragedy occurred in the Castle Peak area, prompting a shift from rescue to recovery efforts, according to Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

On February 18th, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deaths of eight individuals caught in an avalanche near Castle Peak, close to Lake Tahoe . The group was engaged in a backcountry ski trip when the avalanche occurred. Approximately 40 personnel were involved in the initial rescue operation, which has now transitioned to a recovery mission for the remaining missing person.

Authorities have notified the family of the missing individual, indicating a grim outlook. The group consisted of four ski guides and eleven customers. Six members were rescued the previous day, with two requiring immediate hospitalization.

Blackbird Mountain Guide, the agency organizing the ski trip, stated the accident happened during the group’s return to base. The Sheriff’s Office has announced an investigation into the decision to proceed with the trip despite existing weather warnings .
