  • Patients with limited sun exposure due to reduced mobility or institutionalization, which elevates the risk of vitamin D deficiency that impacts bone density, muscle performance, and immune response.
  • People following restrictive diets such as vegetarianism or veganism, who face heightened risks of low vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and omega-3 levels.
  • Patients taking chronic medications like metformin, proton pump inhibitors, or diuretics that interfere with the absorption of magnesium, B12, and other micronutrients.

Safety Considerations and Balanced Lifestyle Approaches

While commercial multivitamins are generally safe at recommended doses, excessive or unnecessary intake carries risks. Dr. Rafael Bielza Galindo, head of geriatry at the Infanta Sofía University Hospital, points out that older adults managing multiple chronic conditions and complex medication regimens face potential adverse effects and drug interactions from unmonitored supplementation.

Medical experts emphasize that supplements should only fill demonstrated nutritional gaps rather than replace wholesome foods. Dr. Bielza Galindo highlights the Mediterranean diet—characterized by fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, olive oil, and nuts—as the primary evidence-backed framework for promoting healthy aging and lowering chronic disease risks. Alongside balanced nutrition, clinicians recommend multi-component physical exercise combining strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility, alongside active social engagement and cardiovascular risk management, to secure long-term functional health and quality of life.
